Woad
(Isatis Tinctoria) is a plant in which the leaves produce an exceptional
blue, ideal for dyeing and painting. In the XVIth century, “the Golden Age” of woad, about 40 tons were exported to England, Belgium, Germany and elsewhere –resulting in wealth that led to he creation of the legendary “Pays de Cocagne” and Toulouse, in fact known then as the “Blue City” before eventually becoming the “Pink City", was one of the two main centres of the medieval woad trade. The
method for preparing woad involved various stages up to forming the pulp
into balls named Waddies. After drying, the balls were crushed to a powder. The “Golden Aged” lasted from 1450 to 1561, then collapsed due to shortages provoked by poor harvests in 1559 to 1561, religious wars and competition from imported natural Indigo which replaced woad. Henri the IVth and Napoleon tried to rescue woad, but sadly with no success. Today, 5 centuries later, WOAD is recovering. Please feel free to contact me for further information – Woad story is quite interesting.
